Shared Research and Writing Project!

Oh my word!  I am soooo SUPER excited about my latest unit!  This is my biggest project yet and I can't wait for you to see it!  I want to give a HUGE shout-out to Ann Marie for contacting me and challenging me!  I am so proud of how this turned out.  A matching Safari/Zoo animals unit is in the works too!  Click on the pic below to check it out.  Be sure and download the preview to see all the pages included for the Bear.

Holy Cow!  That's not even including the Science standards it covers!  Can you imagine how much fun the children will have while covering sooooo many standards?  My first grade team is SUPER PSYCHED to use this in a couple of months.  I will blog more on our ideas for this unit later!

We only have 3 days of school this week so we are doing a LOT of much-needed review.  I hope your week goes well!

Abe and Much, Much, More!

It was sooooo nice to have yesterday off!  Thank you Mr. Presidents!  :)  I was able to get some last minute center activities ready for this week.  Our hero this week is Abraham Lincoln.  Take a look at our centers in pictures!

Here's a look at my February Math Centers.  This week we are working on ten less, ten more, one less and one more.  On the back of our recording sheet we are working on counting on.  It has been nice using the same number cards for 4 different center activities!  Check it out here!


We are also working on telling time to the hour and half hour.  Here is Melissa Machan's "Telling Time with Snowmen" freebie.  Super cute!


 Here's another telling time center.  This one comes from the ladies of  "What the Teacher Wants".  My firsties are loving this!



How about a little contraction action!  This is a fun sorting activity from Ann from the Caffeinated Classroom.  It's called Contractions Make us Buggy.  Check it out!

Here's an Abe Lincoln poem we added to our Poetry Folders this week! 


We do Scott Foresman Reading Street and our story this week is "Where are My Animal Friends?".  Here are a few sweet firsties practicing reading the play with character puppets.  This was a nice change in story!

Whew, seems like a lot doesn't it?  Oh well that's how we roll in 1st grade!  :)  Have a great rest of the week and I'll post Abe pics when we finish the writing part!

Our Hero... George!

Oh my has this already been a busy week!  Valentine's Day and Presidents Day! Whew!  As promised here are my firsties studying up on their newest hero - George Washington.

This little Firstie decided Geroge needed a "stache"!

What We're Up to This Week!

Oh my word!  I felt like I didn't even have time to breath today!  Anybody else feel that way too?  We've been crazy busy lately!  Here's a look at our center for the week.

Can you believe it's February?

Oh my word! Where does the time go?  I can't believe it's already February.  Here's a peek of what we're doing during centers this week.

February Math Centers and a Sale!

I was able to finish my February Math Centers Unit just in time for the big sale!

Here's what's inside:

One Less and One More
The student will pull out a number card from the bag/basket and write it inside the box.  Then they will write one number less on the left and one number more on the right.

Counting On
Same concept, the student will pull a number card from the bag/basket and write it in the box.  Then they will write the next 3 numbers.

Subtracting 10 Adding 10
One Less - One More
The student will pull out a number card from the bag/basket and write it inside the middle box.  Then they will write one number less on the left and one number more on the right and the 10 less on the top and 10 more on the bottom.

Place Value
The student will pull out a number card from the
bag/basket and write the number in the correct boxes on the place value chart.


It's Common Core Aligned!

Number and Operations in Base Ten   -   1.NBT

Extend the Counting Sequence.
1. Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120.  In this range, read and write the numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

Understand Place Value.
2. Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.  Understand the following as special cases:
a. 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones - called a “ten”

b. The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.

c. The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 refer to one,
two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones).

Fluency Stories.... and.... a Sale!

Well, this week seemed FAST and FURIOUS!  We were out last Monday for a professional development day so we only had 4 days.  4 day weeks make me CRAZY!  I never feel like we get everything done.  
We have been using Katie Knight's 13 American Heroes unit.  My students have really enjoyed studying a hero each week.  Our weekly hero was Rosa Parks.  Here are a few pics of us finishing our fluency stories.  Next week we will be studying Susan B. Anthony.
