MLK + Winter Centers

Our 3 day weekend was really nice but back to business today!  We started our MLK unit and my firsties were sooooo excited!  We added MLK to our timeline, made a "smart art" of him and read our fluency stories with our 2nd grade buddies for the first time today.  It went really well and my kiddos were very excited to read with their new buddies.

All of the ideas came from the very talented Katie Knight's 13 American Heroes Unit.  Check it out below!

It is AmAzInG!!!!

Here are some of the centers we're working on this week.

Roll and Graph from my Winter Math Centers.

Winter writing stories - These are vocabulary cards and writing sheets taken from my Winter Literacy Centers and Winter Writing Centers Pack.

You can also check out my Winter Mega Pack which contain all 4 Winter units combined for a cheaper price.

Here's our MLK center for the week.  There are many books, pictures and past weekly readers for the students to read and discover.

We are working on Gladys' ABC order from her Peace and Dreams Unit.

We are working Tally Marks for math also.  Here is a few cuties working with Kelly and Kim's Monster Cube Game.  Check it out here.

It's going to be another GREAT week - I'm excited!  Hope your's is productive!

Buddy Reading and MLK!

Oh my word, we were sooooo busy this week!  I totally forgot to take the pictures of centers I wanted to this week.  Oh well, I did manage to get a few of our buddy reading today.  On Friday's we do a comprehension page that goes along with our decodable readers.  The last few weeks I have let them read their stories and do the comprehension page together with their reading buddies.  They have really done a pretty good job of  working together and talking about the questions and answers together.

Next week is all about Martin Luther King Jr.!  He is one of my absolute favorite units to cover with my firsties!  Even in their naive little minds they totally do not understand how someone could treat another person that way.  They have such tender hearts about the subject of segregation.  I love reading all the books about him.  I will be using several pages from Gladys' unit - Peace and Dreams.  Check it out!  It's a great unit and I'm super excited to use it.  I know you will love it too!

Have a great weekend!  We get a 3 day weekend! ( I really need it to get caught up at school and home)

Super Psyched!

I am soooo super psyched about a new unit I bought!  I purchased Katie Knight's 13 American Heroes Packet and I am in AWE!  I love it!
She has taken 13 American Heroes, given pictures and dates for you to make a timeline, written differentiated fluency stories, and some worksheets to go along with each.  I am pumped and I really think my firsties will LOVE it too!

I got my timeline up yesterday and we talked are talking about Johnny Appleseed this week as a practice (since we've already done a unit over him).  Next week will be the real thing starting with one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES to talk about - Martin Luther King Jr.
Here's a few pics of our timeline. (not the greatest of pics - I took them with my phone)

Here's Martin Luther King Jr. - ready for next week.

Here is Johnny Appleseed that we're "practicing" with this week.

I will put each Hero up as we get to them each week.

I talked to my daughter's teacher today (she's in 3rd grade) and she is going to "lend" me her class to be our reading buddies for the fluency stories.

PLEASE check out Katie's Unit - I know you will love it too!  (click on the image below)

Have a GREAT week!
