Catching Up on .... Leprechauns!

We are always out of school for Spring Break on St. Patrick's Day every year.  I decided to do our leprechaun books and activities after spring break this year.  I just wanted to share a few quick ideas with you.

I found this super cute directed drawing freebie from Jennifer at First Grade Blue Skies.  I thought they turned our super cute!

We've been talking about fractions so I pulled out this cute activity.  We did it last year too and my firsties loved it!  This is from Lisa at Growing Firsties. LOVE her!

In our writing center, we are using Cara's idea on "How to catch a leprechaun".  We will laminate the leprechaun inside of the jar when they're all finished.

We have also been using these adorable March word wall words from Karen from An Apple A Day in First Grade.

We've been working a lot on adjectives too.  I hope to be back soon with some pics and ideas on what we've been doing with adjectives.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great rest of the week!

February - What?!?!?!

Oh my!  Can you believe it is already February?  CrAzY!!!! I have not been a very good blogger lately.  I started to apologize for it but then decided not to!  Ha! I have totally been enjoying family time!  My youngest is playing basketball, my oldest is about to turn 13, I have been hitting the gym like crazy with my good friend, and we have had all kinds of activities going on at church.  I'm loving it!

We have been crazy busy in the classroom as well.  Last week was MLK, this week (after another snow day - ugh!) is Rosa Parks, next week is valentine's activities and then the next 2 weeks will be devoted to Lincoln and Washington.  I just pulled out all my valentines center and activities.  I will definitely be using my February Math Centers unit.

Click on the image below to check it out!  Be sure and download the preview to see more!

Here's what's inside:

One Less and One More
The student will pull out a number card from the bag/basket and write it inside the box.  Then they will write one number less on the left and one number more on the right.

Counting On
Same concept, the student will pull a number card from the bag/basket and write it in the box.  Then they will write the next 3 numbers.

Subtracting 10  Adding 10
One Less - One More
The student will pull out a number card from the bag/basket and write it inside the middle box.  Then they will write one number less on the left and one number more on the right and the 10 less on the top and 10 more on the bottom.

Place Value
The student will pull out a number card from the
bag/basket and write the number in the correct boxes on the place value chart.

It's Common Core Aligned!

Number and Operations in Base Ten   -   1.NBT

Extend the Counting Sequence.
1. Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120.  In this range, read and write the numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.

Understand Place Value.
2. Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.  Understand the following as special cases:
a. 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones - called a “ten”

b. The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.

c. The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 refer to one,
two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones).

Here is my other unit we use in February:

I'm hoping to be back next week with some pictures of these centers in action.  We have some more snowy weather headed our way so we'll see!?!?!

Have a great rest of the week!

Our "mini" Research Project

We've wrapped up our study (for now) of nonfiction text features.  Our first grade team will be doing another huge research and writing project at the end of April, beginning of May like we did last year.  My class will be doing ours over Woodland animals later in the year so we chose to do our "mini" research project over Polar animals for now.  We went through a few pages in my unit to get a feel for what we will be doing in a few months.  My firsties had a lot of fun and are very excited for the 'big" project later.  Here are a few pics of their "mini" project:

(If you would like to see all the pages included,
I have a the pages to go with the polar bear in the preview.)

Here are the other two research projects if you would like to check them out too!
